MIXING
MIXING
Taking a song from a recording to a final mix is something I (Luke O'Kelley) I love to do. To date I've mixed around 80 songs for artists locally in Athens, Georgia and around the world. I usually end up mixing songs in the indie rock, folk/singer-songwriter, alt country, and alternative CCM genres.
I usually charge $300 - $400 a song to mix a song I didn't record depending on:
-
How long the song is
-
How many tracks the song has
-
Whether or not the song needs some editing and/or additional production decision making (many times, if I didn't record it, songs do need additional editing and production input that falls beyond the scope of your standard mix)
-
How many revisions a song needs. I offer 2 revisions included in my mixing price and then $25 a revision after that.
If you're curious what gear we have available for mixing at Red House Studio, feel free to check out our Gear page.
My Process
I like to get on a phone call before I dive into mixing a song to hear what the process was like writing and recording the song. I also like to know who all the decision-makers are for approving the final mix (is it a full band decision, or is it just the artist? Is there a manager or producer that is guiding the process?).
I use Logic Pro X as my mixing DAW, and so I'll need a logic project, or consolidated stems from your session to begin my mix.
I like to have mix references to help me guide my mixing process. I've found that meeting up in person (if schedules and location allow) or hopping on a video call via Sessionwire or Audiomovers is incredibly helpful for dialing in details on a mix.
Using Sessionwire and Audiomovers allows artists to hear high quality audio from my DAW and ask for changes in real time. I can even share my screen so that you can visually see what I'm doing, ask questions, and give me real time feedback.
I really like involving any decison-makers in the process as much as I can. I've found that problems arise in mixing due to communication issues and artistic vision differences much more than they do technical issues.
Songs I've Mixed
Here's a list of songs I've mixed here at the studio. I also mastered a good number of them.
